Separate old-address ads from lease correspondence
Ask each advertiser still mailing the old unit to stop marketing mail there, and say in writing that the request covers promotions only. Rent ledgers, deposit statements and landlord notices belong in a separate conversation with the property manager. The landlord's own leasing promotions can go in a narrow request too, as long as it leaves your account and lease records untouched.
Sort the pile before you write anything
- Sort by the outside of each piece. Coupons, catalogs and apartment-community offers go in one stack. Anything that could concern the lease, a balance or a deposit goes in the other. Do not open mail addressed to a former co-tenant or anyone else.
- For each promotion, write down the sender, the name and unit exactly as printed, and a contact route from the sender's own website, reached by typing the address yourself.
- If the property company mails both leasing promotions and lease correspondence, send it a request that names the promotions you want stopped and states that lease, billing and notice records should stay as they are.
- If other people still live at the old address, ask them before you contact any sender about mail in their name.
- Give the property manager your new address for lease matters in a separate message, and set up USPS forwarding through its official process if you need it.
Why the wording stays narrow
A vague note such as "remove me from your mailings" sent to a property company could be read as an address or account change. That could cost you a final statement or deposit notice you still need. Naming the promotions and excluding account records avoids that.
USPS forwarding is an address-management service. It does not tell advertisers to stop, and a marketing opt-out cannot change where your mail is delivered.

When a promotion still shows up
Compare the new label with your original request. A different name spelling or unit format may point to a separate record, so quote the new version when you go back to that sender. Ask the sender what timing its own process uses before you follow up again.
