Keep account notices while stopping promotions

Unsubscribing from marketing is not the same as closing an account or canceling a subscription or donation. Word your request so it covers promotional mail only.

How to limit the scope of your request

  1. Write "Please remove me from your promotional and marketing mailing list." A line like "stop sending me mail" is ambiguous and could be read to include account mail.
  2. Say which mail you want to keep: "Account statements, billing notices, and required service communications should continue."
  3. If the sender has a preference center, ask whether a marketing-only postal setting is offered there.
  4. Send the request to the marketing or customer-preference contact so it reaches the team that manages promotional lists.

Why broad wording causes trouble

A vaguely worded request can be read as a request to suppress all mail or to close the account. If the sender publishes an explanation of what a promotional opt-out covers, read it before you submit. Fixing a mistaken account change can take time, and the sender decides what an opt-out covers.

Read what the reply covers

When the confirmation arrives, check whether it says required communications will continue. If it does not, ask customer service to state in writing which kinds of mail the removal affects and which it leaves out.
