Review advertising after a postal address correction

An advertisement printed with your corrected address shows only how that sender addressed this piece. It does not show where the sender got the address or that a new list now has your name. To change what the advertiser sends, compare the label with your correct address and ask that sender about its own record.

Compare, then ask the sender

  1. Set the label next to your correct address and note each difference: street abbreviation, unit format, ZIP code, name spelling or an added line.
  2. Find the sender name and any customer or reference number printed on the piece. Do not guess the sender from a logo or layout alone.
  3. Look for a removal route on the piece or the sender's website. If none is stated, ask the sender whether an option exists.
  4. In the request, give the name and address exactly as printed and say which version is correct.
  5. Keep the piece or a note of the sender and date so you can compare a later mailing.

What the correction does not change

USPS address-change and forwarding services control where mail is delivered. They are separate from an advertiser's preferences, and a marketing opt-out cannot change a delivery address.

If the label shows an older version of your name or a name you do not recognize, quote it in the request so the sender can locate the record. Only handle mail addressed to you or to someone who has given you permission to act for them.

Sample request to an advertiser

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Please stop sending advertising to the following name and address, as printed on your mailing: [name and address exactly as printed]. My correct address is [correct address]. Please apply this request to every version of this name and address in your marketing records. Reference or customer number on the piece, if any: [number].

Check the next mailing

Send the request to the sender whose piece has the clearest name and reference details. When that sender's next advertisement arrives, compare its label with the one you quoted. If a version you did not list appears, send the sender that label text too.

Choose the route that matches the mailing

Use the official route described in this guide for this kind of mail. For a separate ordinary advertisement, Junk Mail Magic can help prepare a sender-specific removal request.
