Does forwarding update every catalog preference?
No. A USPS forwarding request is not a confirmation that every catalog has your desired address and marketing preference. Arrange delivery with USPS, then confirm the wanted and unwanted mail choices with each sender. An address update and a request to stop advertising are different instructions.
Update senders one at a time
- Start the postal change through the official USPS process that fits your situation. USPS has separate processes for individual, family, business and certain special address changes.
- List the catalogs you want to keep receiving. Give each one your new address through its own contact route.
- List the senders you do not want at either address. Send each a request to stop mailed advertising, and include the old address exactly as it appears on that sender's label.
- Compare the labels that arrive with your requests. An old address shows what was printed on that piece, not necessarily the sender’s current record. Ask the sender which record or campaign produced it.
Why the two records drift apart
If you asked a catalog to stop mailing your old address, ask whether its confirmation also covers mail associated with your new address. Do not assume that receiving forwarded mail means the sender received or applied the marketing request.
Keep each company’s answer separate from the USPS confirmation. A postal service’s delivery terms do not tell you what a company’s own advertising preference includes. Read the terms for the USPS service you chose when checking how a particular mailpiece will be handled.
Move tracking worksheet
Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.
Run the move worksheet
Make two columns, one for the postal change and one for sender updates. In the first, enter the forwarding service and its start date. In the second, record each sender, whether you want to keep or stop its mail and the date you contacted it. Compare that column with what actually arrives at the new address, and follow up only with the senders still out of step.

Choose the route that matches the mailing
Use the official route described in this guide for this kind of mail. For a separate ordinary advertisement, Junk Mail Magic can help prepare a sender-specific removal request.
