Ask a sender to remove a painful marketing category

You can ask to stop a category of advertising without describing your loss. Name the product category and the printed recipient record, then say what you want changed. Use the sender’s own contact route. A brief request avoids repeating private family details to a customer-service team.

Write the request

  1. Describe the category in plain words taken from the mailing itself, such as the product or service it advertises.
  2. Copy the name and address exactly as printed so the sender can find the record.
  3. Find the sender's contact route yourself, from its website or the return address, rather than a number printed in the ad.
  4. If you have an account with this sender, say that the request covers this advertising only.

Reading the reply

A sender may make a broader or narrower change than the one you asked for, so read any reply for what it says it will do. A request doesn't guarantee the mail stops, and other senders may still send the same category. If you're handling mail addressed to someone else, confirm you have their permission or the authority to act first.

Sample category request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Please stop sending [product category] advertising to [name as printed] at [mailing address]. The mailing I received came from [sender name] on [date]. This request covers advertising only. Please tell me what change you have made, or what you are able to do.

Reuse it for the next sender

File the reply with the original mailing. If the same category arrives later from another company, copy the request, change the sender name and date, and send it through that company's own route.
