Review jointly addressed catalogs after a spouse dies

Write to each catalog company and ask it to remove your late spouse's name from its mailing record. Choose the catalog you want to keep before you write anything. That sender gets a name correction. The rest get a request to stop.

Sort the stack before writing

  1. Set aside every catalog addressed to both names. For each one, note the sender, the names exactly as printed, and any customer or source code near the address.
  2. Pick the catalog you want to keep. Mark it so you don't accidentally send that company a stop request.
  3. Find each sender's contact route on its official website. Look for a mailing preferences page or a customer service address.
  4. Ask the kept sender to address future mail to you alone. Ask the other senders to stop promotional catalogs to this record.
  5. If a company mentions a separate process for deceased customers, ask how it works before you assume anything.

Keep estate mail out of this pile

A jointly addressed catalog may be one shared promotional record rather than two separate subscriptions. Copy the full printed addressee when asking the company to change it. State your own name for the catalog you want to keep, and ask what it will do if the records cannot be separated that way.

This is a preference about ordinary advertising. Put paid subscriptions and actual account correspondence aside for their own provider or estate process.

Sample name-update request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Please update your mailing record for [mailing address]. Remove [deceased name as printed] and address future mail to [surviving recipient name] only. I would like to keep receiving [catalog name]. [For other senders: Please stop sending promotional catalogs to this record.] Customer or source code, if printed: [code].

Compare the next delivery

When the kept catalog arrives, check whether the label shows only your name. If the old name is still there, reply to the same company. Quote your earlier request and give the date you sent it. Ask that company how long its records usually take to update.
