Read a postal-mail choice at retail checkout

Checkout prompts about postal mail differ in what they cover. Some name one store, some name a whole family of brands, and some mention partners. The exact wording tells you what you are agreeing to.

How to handle a mail prompt at checkout

  1. Read the full wording before you check or uncheck anything. Note whether it names one brand, several brands, or outside partners.
  2. If the wording is unclear, ask the cashier or a manager whether it covers only this store or other brands too.
  3. If your receipt or screen shows the choice you made, photograph it. That gives you something to refer to if mail arrives later.
  4. If mail later arrives from a sender you did not expect, photograph that piece and submit it for a separate removal request. Do not count on the checkout choice to correct it.

Why one checkbox may not cover everything

A company may run several brands, and a preference given at one register may apply to only one of them. If the prompt is spoken and not written, ask what it covers and whether you can get that in writing. Mail already in production may also arrive after you opt out. Ask the store whether it can tell you how long a change takes.

Keep mail that arrives afterward

Hold on to any piece that arrives after you set a preference. If the sender was not covered by your choice, photograph the label and submit it through Junk Mail Magic. See the comparison of postal opt-out options for other routes.

Have an unwanted advertisement ready?

Photograph one piece you are authorized to handle, with the sender and full mailing label visible. Review the details before submitting. The first request is free; the sender controls the response.
