Plan home advertising changes during a work relocation

Tie your advertising changes to the move timeline. Update employer, relocation and other essential mail first through official routes. Ask advertisers to stop mailing the old address when you leave, and give a new address to marketers only once you know it will last.

Lay out the move as a timeline

  1. Write the move date, the temporary stay dates and the date your permanent address starts. Mark any that are not confirmed.
  2. List the essential mail, such as employer or relocation paperwork, and change those addresses through each organization's official route or USPS.
  3. Collect the catalogs and promotions arriving at the old address. Note each sender's name and the address as printed.
  4. For each sender, decide whether you want its advertising at all. Ask to stop mail at the old address, and ask for an update to the new address only if you want it to continue.
  5. Keep the temporary address off marketing requests unless you have a specific reason to receive ads there.

Keep employer mail out of the process

An advertising request changes what one sender mails. It does not update an employer's records, and it does not replace a USPS address change. Keep relocation letters and employer correspondence out of your advertising folder.

If a spouse or partner is moving with you, ask before sending requests about their promotions. Each person may want different senders to continue.

Move timeline worksheet

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Move date: [date] Temporary stay: [address] / [dates] Permanent address starts: [date, confirmed?] Essential updates and route: [organization] / [route] / [done?] Stop at old address: [sender] / [requested on] Update to new address: [sender or none]

Mark the date to send old-address requests

Put your departure date from the old address at the top of the timeline and plan the stop requests for that week. Leave the new-address column blank until the permanent address is confirmed.
