Ask why a showroom needs your home address

Before you fill in the card, ask staff one question: do you need my address to prepare the quote, or is it for mailing promotions? If it's only for promotions, you can usually leave it off. If the quote or a delivery needs it, give the address and state your mail preference at the same time.

What to say at the counter

  1. Say what you want, for example a price, and how you'd like to receive it, such as by email or phone.
  2. Ask what the address will be used for: measuring, delivery or installation scheduling, or printed promotions.
  3. Read the card for an optional label or a promotional mail box before you sign it.
  4. If the quote needs your address, write next to it that you don't want printed promotions, or ask staff to record that preference.
  5. Ask where the store publishes its privacy or mailing policy, and read it yourself later.

Fields marked required

Don't assume the store shares addresses or offers detailed mail settings. The card and the published policy show what it actually does. If a field is marked required, ask what happens if you leave it blank.

If an invoice or unordered item later arrives from a store you only visited, compare it with your own records before paying. FTC guidance for businesses lists fake invoices and unordered goods as scam risks and advises checking invoices against approved records.

Private worksheet and sample message

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Worksheet: Store: [name] Date visited: [date] Stated use of address: [quote / delivery / promotions] Field marked required: [yes / no] Policy location: [where found] Reply: [summary] Sample message: I visited on [date] and gave my address for [quote or delivery]. Please use it only for that purpose and do not send me printed promotions. Can you confirm how this preference is recorded?

If you already gave your address

Send the sample message through the store's own contact page and record the reply in your worksheet. Next time, decide before you visit whether you'll share an address for a quote or ask for contact by email instead.
