Check who publishes apartment welcome offers

Do not assume your landlord sponsored a welcome packet of coupons. Ask the property office whether it distributed the packet, then take any request about mailed offers to the advertiser or publisher named on it.

Trace the packet to its publisher

  1. Check the packet for a company name, return address or contact line. A brand on the cover may be one advertiser among several rather than the publisher.
  2. Ask the property office whether it distributed the packet and whether it knows who produces it.
  3. Look up the named publisher's contact details yourself instead of relying only on a link printed in the packet.
  4. Ask the publisher whether it offers a way to stop mailed advertising to your address, and say whether you want to keep any other mail from it.

Named or unnamed delivery

Note whether the packet carries your name or just a unit address, or arrived with no address at all. Tell the publisher which it was, since it can then check the right kind of record, and ask what options it has instead of assuming one exists.

The property office may know who hands out the packet without knowing where any mailing list came from. A logo or layout does not show who supplied an address or what the sender is obligated to do, so record the answers you get.

Sample question to the property office

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Hello, I received a welcome packet of offers at [unit/address] on [date]. Did the property distribute it, and do you know which company published it? The packet shows [company name, if any]. I would like to contact the publisher about mailed advertising. Thank you, [name]

Send the property question first

Use the sample below with the property office. Once you have a publisher name, send that company a short stop request quoting the address exactly as it appears on the packet.
