Review store mailing records when households combine

When two households combine, one store may hold a separate customer record for each person at the same home. Confirm which record each person authorizes you to review, agree on one preferred mailing address, and ask the store about duplicate catalogs. Leave purchase history, returns and payment details alone.

Compare the records before asking for changes

  1. Gather the catalogs from one store. Compare the name and address lines, including spelling variations, initials and old apartment numbers. Handle only advertising addressed to you or to someone who has said you may help.
  2. Ask each person which record is theirs and whether they want that store's catalogs at all. One person may want the printed catalog while the other does not.
  3. Agree on one mailing address, and note the name spelling that should appear on the label.
  4. Find the store's contact or mailing-preference page. Ask whether it can combine duplicate marketing records or whether each name needs its own request.
  5. Send a request for each authorized record and note the date on the worksheet.

Ask about catalogs, not accounts

A duplicate mailing record is different from a customer account. Purchase history, loyalty balances, warranties and saved payment methods belong to the account holder, so do not ask the store to delete or combine them unless that person wants it.

Never open mail addressed to another adult, and do not use an advertising request to change their official records. If someone has not decided about catalogs, leave their record out. A USPS address change handles delivery and is separate from the preferences a store keeps.

Private worksheet for combined records

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Store: [store name] Record 1 name and address as printed: [details] Authorized by: [name] Record 2 name and address as printed: [details] Authorized by: [name] Preferred mailing address: [address] Catalogs wanted? [yes/no per person] Date requested: [date] Store reply: [notes]

Work through one store at a time

Start with the store that sends the most duplicate catalogs. Fill in the worksheet for its two records and send the request. When the next catalogs arrive, compare their labels with your worksheet to see whether a duplicate still appears.
