Review donor mail that returns after another gift
If appeals from a charity start again after you give another gift, the gift may have reset your mailing preference. Contact the charity and ask it to stop mailed appeals while leaving your donation record alone.
How to address resumed donor mail
- Gather the appeal and note the charity's full name, its return address, and any donor ID printed on the label or inside.
- Check your latest gift receipt or acknowledgment for any mention of mailing preferences or an opt-out.
- Write or call the charity's donor services team with your name, address, and donor ID if you have one. Ask to be removed from postal appeals without affecting your gift record.
- If you cannot reach the charity, photograph the appeal label and submit it through Junk Mail Magic.
Appeals and gifts are different things
Stopping appeals is different from canceling a recurring donation or closing a membership. Say clearly which one you want. It is also worth asking whether your name has been shared with partner organizations and whether you can opt out of that too.
Ask for a note on your record
Ask the charity to add a note about your mail preference to your donor record and to send you a short confirmation, so you have something to point to if appeals resume.
