Write a donor list-sharing request
Some charities share or rent donor lists with other nonprofits. Stopping that sharing is a different request from stopping the charity's own mail, so write each one separately.
How to write this request
- Address the letter to the charity's donor services or privacy contact, with your name and address as printed on the label.
- Write one sentence for sharing: "Please do not share, rent, or exchange my name and address with any other organization."
- To stop the charity's own appeals too, add a second sentence on its own line. Keeping the two asks apart helps each be handled clearly.
- Ask whether your request affects lists already shared, and record the answer.
What this request covers
If honored, a sharing opt-out asks the charity to stop giving your name to new organizations. Groups that already have it may keep mailing until you contact them separately. The charity's own appeals continue unless you ask to end those as well.
Track new senders
Keep a list of new senders that arrive after your request, since they may have your name from an earlier share. Contact each one directly. Our guide at the comparison of postal opt-out options covers identifying unfamiliar senders.
