Choose between a privacy request and a mail preference
Choose the specific change you want. Stopping postal advertising, correcting personal details and making a broader data request can involve different contacts and verification steps.
Identify which goal fits your situation
- Write down the specific outcome you want, such as stopping one sender's paper catalogs.
- For postal advertising, use the sender's published mailing-preference route and quote the label you received.
- For access to personal information, a correction or deletion, read the company's published privacy-request instructions and choose the relevant process.
- Keep each request and acknowledgment separately so you can tell which outcome the company has addressed.
Why the two requests can end differently
Taking your address off a mailing list may still leave a record in a database so the sender can keep you suppressed. A deletion request targets the data itself, though what a company must delete depends on its own policies and where you live. Neither request guarantees the result of the other. Stopping marketing mail is also a different thing from canceling an account, a donation, or a subscription, which are handled separately with the sender.
Start with the narrower request
Choose the change you want before writing: less advertising, a correction, or a broader privacy request. Use the sender's published privacy instructions for the broader request. Junk Mail Magic's privacy policy describes the service's own handling of submitted information.
