Read a mailer that names a data or list company

Some mailers say that a data or list company supplied the mailing list. That company provided your address, and the advertiser sent the mail. They are separate companies, and the right contact depends on what you want to change.

How to work out who to contact when a list company is named

  1. Read the fine print to see whether the list company only supplied the list or also prepared and mailed the piece, since the two roles can have different opt-out routes.
  2. To stop mail from this advertiser, use the advertiser's own privacy or opt-out route, because the advertiser chose to mail you.
  3. To ask the list company to stop supplying your address in the future, find its privacy policy and opt-out instructions on its official website.
  4. Photograph the mailer and submit your removal request about the advertiser first, then visit the list company's site to see whether it accepts suppression requests.

A list company opt-out may not stop current campaigns

Asking a list company to suppress your address may affect future list rentals or sales, but it will not necessarily pull you from a campaign the advertiser has already prepared. Contact the advertiser about the mail you are receiving now and the list company about the longer term. Ask each what its process covers.

Make two separate requests

Send one request to the advertiser to stop its mailings and a separate one to the list company about future use of your address. Keep the confirmation from each. The guide at the comparison of postal opt-out options covers other opt-out routes by mail type.
