Reduce brochures after touring a campus

After a tour, write to that school's admissions office and ask it to stop sending printed recruitment brochures. Include the visit date so staff can find the student's record. The student can prefer less paper while still considering the school.

Write to the school you visited

  1. From the brochure, copy the school name, the name and address exactly as printed, and any reference number.
  2. Note the date of the tour or information session.
  3. Find the admissions contact on the school's official website. Check whether it lists a way to change mailing preferences.
  4. In the request, name the printed materials to stop and the communications to keep, such as notices about an active application or financial aid.

Why a test-program opt-out may not be enough

Student Search and ACT Recruit Me are test-provider programs. College Board says organizations that already have a student's information may keep contacting the student after an opt-out and recommends contacting them directly. A brochure does not show how the school got the address, so give the visit date and let the admissions office check its own records.

Sample campus-visit request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

To the [school name] admissions office: Please stop sending printed recruitment brochures to [student name as printed] at [mailing address]. We visited on or around [visit date]. Reference number, if printed: [number]. Please continue to send any messages about an active application or financial aid. This request covers marketing mail only. [Sender name, relationship to student]

Decide school by school

For each toured school, note which printed materials the student wants and which application or financial-aid communications must continue. Ask admissions to confirm those choices separately. If the office cannot make that distinction, learn what its available setting covers before deciding whether to use it.
