Submit a California sale or sharing opt-out
If you are a California resident and want a covered business to stop selling or sharing your personal information, use its designated privacy route to submit that choice. State the right you are exercising. A general message asking for fewer advertisements may leave the company unsure whether you intended a CCPA opt-out.
Submit the choice through the business’s privacy route
- Open the business’s official privacy policy and find its California request instructions. Look for a sale or sharing option, which may appear under Do Not Sell or Share, Your Privacy Choices or a similar heading.
- Select the option that stops sale or sharing. Read any descriptions beside the controls before submitting; a deletion request asks for a different action.
- Provide the information needed to match the request to your information through that official process. If the form asks for identity documents, check the separate guide on opt-out verification before supplying them.
- When a text field is available, make the election explicit using the sample below. Follow the stated submission steps and retain the page wording, selected option and date.
- Save the completion message or reference number. Read the reply for what was processed and any reason the business gives for refusing the request.
What this election covers
The CCPA gives California residents a sale or sharing opt-out right against covered businesses, with exceptions. Sharing here concerns advertising based on activity across different businesses; it does not mean every disclosure of information. CalPrivacy’s consumer guidance explains the right and its request methods.
A business may say it does not sell or share the information at issue. Keep that explanation. This election also does not establish that the business changed its own printed-mail preference. Use its postal setting separately if you want that change.

Clarify an ambiguous acknowledgment
If the reply only says that marketing preferences were updated, ask whether the business processed your CCPA sale or sharing opt-out. Refer to the original date and chosen option. Save the answer with the request so its scope remains clear.
