Renew an affiliate marketing opt-out when the notice requires it
An affiliate marketing opt-out can have an expiration date. Under the CFPB rule, the covered choice lasts at least five years from receipt and implementation, but the institution may provide a longer or indefinite period. Read your actual notice before deciding renewal is due.
Compare the earlier choice with the renewal notice
- Find the earlier confirmation or notice. Record the institution, covered affiliates and duration without copying account numbers into a general mail log.
- Verify the new notice through the institution’s established website, secure account or known contact. A familiar logo on an unsolicited letter is not enough.
- Read which affiliates and eligibility information the renewal covers, how long the renewed choice lasts and the reasonable response method offered.
- If you want to renew, use that method and save confirmation. If the notice conflicts with an indefinite earlier choice, ask the institution to explain before changing it.
Know which advertising this limits
This rule concerns covered solicitations using eligibility information received from an affiliate. It is not a universal block on the institution’s own advertising or every business in a corporate group. The notice should identify the choice being renewed.
The rule sets conditions on resuming covered solicitations after expiration, subject to applicable exceptions. An early renewal notice does not shorten the existing period. Do not substitute a guessed five-year anniversary for the institution’s recorded receipt and implementation date.

Keep the new term with the old one
Record the renewed period and unresolved questions. An unrelated advertisement is not proof this choice expired; check the advertiser and information-sharing route first.
