Check whose choice a joint-account privacy opt-out changes

A privacy choice for a joint financial account may apply to everyone on the account or allow an individual election. The institution’s notice should explain its method. Read that section before submitting a choice on the assumption it affects only your mail.

Find the joint-account instruction

  1. Use the institution’s verified privacy notice or secure account route. Locate the response section and any sentence about accounts held jointly.
  2. Read whether an election applies to all holders or offers an individual option. If unclear, ask the institution to explain its procedure before responding.
  3. Identify the particular sharing choices available. The model form’s reasons-for-sharing table distinguishes what the institution shares from what you can limit.
  4. Submit only the choice you intend using the stated method. Keep the relevant notice wording and confirmation privately, including whose election it records.

The account is not the whole household

The CFPB rule permits different approaches to joint relationships, provided the institution explains how its opt-out works. Do not infer the effect from a checkbox alone or assume every institution handles joint accounts identically. Where one election applies to everyone, discuss the effect with the other holder before making an avoidable surprise change.

An information-sharing election does not close the account or stop statements. It does not change unrelated adults’ mailing records simply because they share your address.

Example question through the verified account channel

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Your privacy notice dated [date] says [copy joint-account instruction]. Before I submit [available choice], please confirm whether it applies to [me individually / all holders of this relationship]. If individual choices are available, which stated method should I use? This concerns information-sharing preferences, not account closure or statement delivery.

Clarify the scope in the confirmation

If confirmation does not explain the joint-account scope, ask for that information. Keep account identifiers in the institution’s authenticated channel rather than an ordinary advertising-removal request.
