How to Stop Discover Card Junk Mail

Ask Discover to stop postal marketing through its customer-service or authenticated chat route. Use a separate credit-bureau opt-out when the piece is a prescreened offer.

Start by reading the offer and the mailing label. Discover marketing sent to a current customer, a former customer, and a person selected through a credit-bureau prescreening list can require different requests. Keep the piece until you know which route applies.

Ask Discover to stop postal marketing

Discover's current Online Privacy Notice directs general customer-service and non-solicitation requests to 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683). Existing customers can also send a specific request through authenticated chat from the Discover contact page.

  1. Have the unwanted mailer in front of you.
  2. Ask to stop Discover promotional postal mail for the name and address printed on the piece.
  3. Say that you still want required account and security communications.
  4. Record the date, channel, and any confirmation or case number.

If the label uses an old address, alternate spelling, business name, or second household member, mention that exact variation. It may point to another marketing record.

Use OptOutPrescreen for a prescreened offer

Look for a notice explaining that the offer was based on information in a consumer report. That language means the broadest first step is OptOutPrescreen.com, the official service for the major credit reporting companies. It offers a five-year electronic opt-out and a permanent option that requires a signed form.

A Discover non-solicitation request addresses Discover's own marketing record. OptOutPrescreen addresses the credit-bureau lists used for firm credit and insurance offers from many companies. Complete both when the piece is prescreened and you also want Discover-specific marketing stopped.

Do not confuse mail preferences with privacy sharing

The Discover Card Consumer Privacy Notice lists 1-800-225-5202 for choices that limit certain affiliate and nonaffiliate information sharing. Those choices are not presented as a universal postal-mail unsubscribe. Use the non-solicitation route above and state that your request concerns physical promotional mail.

Likewise, an email unsubscribe changes promotional email. Browser advertising controls affect online ads. Neither one should be treated as confirmation that a postal address was removed from Discover marketing.

Check whether Capital One services the account

Discover is now part of Capital One, but the correct privacy route still depends on the product record. The Discover Privacy Center says people with a product described as a “Discover by Capital One” account that is serviced directly by Capital One should use Capital One's privacy choices. It also says people with records at both companies may need to exercise choices in both places.

Use the branding, servicing information, and contact details printed on the piece. Do not assume one request automatically changes every Discover and Capital One record.

Keep statements and security notices

A marketing preference should not interrupt statements, replacement-card notices, fraud alerts, tax documents, payment information, changes to account terms, or other servicing and legal communications. Discover's Online Privacy Notice says transactional messages may continue after a marketing opt-out.

Do not upload or send a full card number, Social Security number, password, PIN, credit application, bank statement, or identity document to Junk Mail Magic. Use Discover's secure account channels for account-specific information.

Where Junk Mail Magic fits

Use OptOutPrescreen when the offer contains a prescreen notice. For other Discover promotional mail, a clear photo can preserve the sender, recipient spelling, address, and offer code while Junk Mail Magic prepares a focused postal-removal request.

If the offer is for someone who no longer lives at your address, do not impersonate that person or enter their identity into a credit-bureau form. Follow the previous-resident mail guide and tell the sender that its delivery record is outdated.
