Sort advertisements inside a welcome packet
A welcome packet from a utility, city office, or moving service may hold official documents alongside advertising from local sponsors. Each advertiser may be a different company, so one request will not cover them all.
How to sort the pieces
- Separate the official forms and documents from the advertising, and keep everything official.
- Identify each advertiser by the company name, logo, and contact details on its own piece.
- Check each advertisement for a mailing label with your address. Many inserts have none.
- Submit a request only for a piece where a photo can show both the sender and a label with your address. For the others, contact the advertiser directly.
The distributor and the sponsors are different
Identify the packet distributor and each advertiser separately. Ask the distributor what a preference change would cover, and contact an advertiser directly if you want to understand its own mailing practices. Keep official documents and account correspondence out of advertising submissions, even when they arrived in the same envelope.
Handle official papers first
File the official paperwork first. Then keep a short list of the advertisers you contacted, the route used and any reply. Set aside inserts without a recipient label until you have checked which organization can handle the request.

Have an unwanted advertisement ready?
Photograph one piece you are authorized to handle, with the sender and full mailing label visible. Review the details before submitting. The first request is free; the sender controls the response.
