Photograph a mailing label with tiny print
When a label is printed in very small type, a standard snapshot can come out blurry or too small to read. Moving closer and setting focus before you shoot fixes most of these problems.
Steps for a sharp close-up
- Move the phone closer to the label instead of zooming digitally. Digital zoom enlarges pixels and makes tiny characters harder to read.
- Tap the label on the screen to set focus there, and wait for the focus indicator to settle before pressing the shutter.
- Hold the phone steady, or rest your elbows on a table. Small movements cause more blur at close range.
- After shooting, crop away extra cover if you like, but keep the entire label block: name, street address, city, state, ZIP, and any sender codes.
Staying close while keeping the full label
Getting close enough to read tiny print can push the edges of the label out of frame. Check all four corners in the preview before you leave that position. If your phone struggles to focus up close, back away a little at a time until it focuses cleanly. The best frame is the smallest one that still contains every line of the label. Avoid pinching to zoom after focusing, because that cannot restore detail the camera did not capture.
Verify the digits before uploading
Zoom into the saved photo and read each character on the label. If any digit in the ZIP code or any letter in the sender line is unclear, retake the shot before you submit.
