Complete a mail preference using a shared computer

On a shared or public computer, finish the request in one sitting and type only what the form needs. Turn down every prompt to save a password or address. Write any confirmation on paper rather than leaving it in a shared downloads folder.

Checklist for one session

  1. Before you start, write down the sender name and the mailing name and address as printed on the mailer.
  2. Open a private or guest browsing window if the device offers one. Type the sender's official website address yourself.
  3. Decline account creation when the form allows it, and say no to any prompt to remember your name, address or login.
  4. Fill in only the required fields. Leave optional fields such as phone number blank.
  5. Copy any confirmation wording or reference number onto paper. Then sign out, close the private window and clear the browsing history if the device lets you.

Files and details that can stay behind

A routine advertising request should not need account numbers or identity details. If a page asks for them, stop and look for another route on the sender's official site, such as a phone number or mailing address.

Downloaded confirmations can stay in a shared folder after you leave. If you have to download one, delete it from the downloads folder and the recycle bin. Otherwise, view it on screen and copy the key line.

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Sender name: [sender name] Mailing name and address as printed: [name and address as printed] Official website I typed myself: [website address] Date and device used: [date], [device or location] Private window used: [yes/no] Any password or address saved: [yes/no] Confirmation wording or reference: [wording or reference number] Downloads deleted: [yes/no/none] Signed out and window closed: [yes/no] Where my private note is kept: [location]

Back at home

Move the sender name, date and reference number from your paper note into your own mail records. When the next mailer from that sender arrives, compare its name and address with your note before you contact the sender again.
