Reduce retailer promotions after a school fundraiser

For an unwanted retailer catalog that arrives after a school fundraiser, contact the vendor named on the piece. The timing does not prove the fundraiser supplied your address. Keep pickup reminders, receipts and delivery notices with the order, and ask about the vendor's optional catalogs and sales postcards separately.

Sort the pile, then write to the vendor

  1. Split the mail into two stacks. Keep anything about delivery, pickup, a refund or a product problem. Put catalogs, coupon mailers and seasonal sale postcards in a second stack.
  2. Find the vendor's name on the marketing pieces, often near the return address or order instructions. A school logo or layout does not show who supplied your address. If you want to know, ask the vendor.
  3. Look on the vendor's own website for a mail or contact preference. If one exists, check whether it covers paper separately from email. If you cannot find one, send the request below to its customer service contact.
  4. Mention the fundraiser order so the vendor can find your record, and say that you still want order and delivery messages.

School notices are a separate ask

The school office may not control the vendor's mailing list. The vendor may not control what the school sends home about events or pickup. Only write to the vendor if the piece is clearly vendor marketing.

If the mail is addressed to a spouse or another adult, that person should approve or send the request. Do not include a child's documents or records.

Sample vendor request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

I placed an order through the [school name] fundraiser on or around [date]. Please stop printed catalogs and promotional offers addressed to [name as printed] at [address]. Please keep sending order, delivery and customer service messages for that purchase. Can you tell me which preference controls postal marketing and whether you expect any further mailings before the change applies?

Check the next batch

When the next vendor piece arrives, compare its name and address line with your request. If the line matches and the piece is still marketing, reply to the same vendor contact and quote that line. If a different company sent it, write a separate request to that company.
