Handle mail after submitting rental applications
Ask the application service or the named sender to stop promotional mail only, and say plainly that your application should stay active. Keep that request separate from anything about the application itself.
Write a promotions-only request
- List the services and properties that have your address from the search, such as listing sites, screening services and properties. Do not guess which one sent a mailer. Go by the sender's name printed on it, or ask.
- Find each sender's privacy, contact or communication preferences page on its official website. Note whether it lists postal marketing separately from email.
- In your request, name only promotional postal mail. State that your application is pending and that application, decision and leasing messages should continue.
- Record the date and the channel you used. Ask the sender to confirm what it changed instead of assuming a result.
- If no postal option is listed, ask in writing whether one exists.
What to leave alone
Do not delete an account, withdraw an application or ask for all contact to stop. Decision, fee and lease notices are not advertising. Keep this worksheet private and do not photograph or upload letters, legal notices or anyone else's correspondence. If mail names another person at the unit, leave it sealed.

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.
Follow up only where needed
If a sender gave a processing time, check your mail after that time and follow up only with senders whose promotions continue. If it gave no time, ask when you should expect the change.
