Find a customer ID requested by an opt-out form
A sender's opt-out form may ask for a customer ID or account number. If your mailing piece has one, it is usually printed on the piece itself, so look there first.
Where to look for the ID
- Examine the mailing label. IDs are often printed in small type near the address block, sometimes with a pound sign or letter prefix.
- If the label shows nothing, check the back panel or inside the piece. Catalogs and magazines may print a member or subscriber number near the barcode.
- Check whether the form accepts part of the number. Some senders use only the last digits, but confirm that in the form's instructions rather than guessing.
- If no ID appears anywhere, tell the sender's support team and ask whether they can process the removal with your name and mailing address. Do not guess or enter a number from a different mailer.
When the ID is missing
Not every mailing piece carries a customer ID, and some forms ask for one without requiring it. Try submitting without it first. If the form blocks you, contact customer service and explain that the piece has no ID on it. Do not enter a number from a loyalty card, an online account, or unrelated correspondence, because it may belong to a different system.
Keep the mailing piece
Hold onto the original piece until the sender confirms the removal. The ID and label details may be needed again if the sender asks you to verify which record they are removing.
