Reduce museum member promotions while keeping tickets

Ask the museum's membership or visitor services office to stop printed exhibition promotions and fundraising appeals, and name the notices you still want, such as ticket confirmations. Say plainly that the request covers marketing mail only. Whether it affects a membership, a ticket order or recurring giving is something the museum has to confirm.

Sort the museum mail before you write

  1. Make three piles from recent mail: exhibition sales pitches, fundraising appeals, and anything tied to a purchase, such as a ticket confirmation or timed-entry notice.
  2. Copy the sender name, return address and your name exactly as printed on each label. If the spellings differ, list each version in your request.
  3. Find the museum's contact route on its official website, such as a membership, visitor services or development page, and check whether it offers a communication preferences option.
  4. Ask for printed sales and appeal mail to stop, and list the notices to keep, such as purchase confirmations and any membership notices you want.
  5. Ask which record the request applies to, such as membership, ticket buyer or donor, in case the museum keeps more than one.

What to confirm with the museum

Ask the museum to confirm that the request leaves your membership, recurring gift and tickets unchanged. Also ask whether it covers every department that mails you. An email unsubscribe may or may not change the paper list, so ask about each channel separately.

Example museum mail request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Please stop printed exhibition promotions and fundraising appeals addressed to [name as printed] at [mailing address]. Please keep sending purchase confirmations, notices for events I registered for, and [membership notices, if wanted]. This is a request about postal marketing only. Please confirm it does not change my membership, tickets or giving, and tell me which record it applies to: membership, ticket buyer or donor.

Check the next mailing against your keep list

Compare the next envelope with the keep list in your request. A ticket or event notice you asked to keep needs no action. If a sales piece arrives, reply to the same office with the sender name, the label text and the date of your first request, and ask which record that mailing came from.
