Handle marketing mail under an earlier last name
A sender's record may carry a name from years ago. A removal request that uses only your current name may not match it, so quote the name as it is printed on the label.
How to handle an earlier name on a label
- Write the name exactly as printed, including an old last name or a hyphenated or combined form.
- Photograph the whole label with that name clearly readable and the sender's name or logo in the frame.
- Submit the photo through Junk Mail Magic. In your note, quote the printed name and say it is a former name for you at this address.
- If mail arrives under several name variations, submit a separate request for each distinct label, since each may be a separate record.
Name changes and mailing records
Marketing lists are not automatically updated when someone changes a name, so a sender may keep the old one on file. A removal request does not change any official record, credit file, or government document. If the same sender also mails you under your current name, that is likely a separate record and needs its own request with its own label photo.
Keep track of the names you have covered
Keep a note of the name variations included in your request and the date you sent it. If the old name appears again, compare that label with your saved record before following up. Include the exact printed name when asking the sender to check whether it was covered.
