Update advertising preferences after a name change

After a name change, advertising may arrive under both your former name and your new one. Keeping advertising separate from legal and financial mail makes the cleanup simpler.

How to manage advertising mail after a name change

  1. Sort mail by the name on the label. Set aside anything from a bank, government agency, employer, insurer, or medical provider, even if it uses your former name. Update your name with each of those institutions directly.
  2. From the advertising addressed to your former name, photograph each piece separately with the mailing label and sender name readable. Review the prepared details, sign in, and submit each photo as its own request.
  3. Do the same for advertising under your new name from senders you do not want to hear from. Submit these separately from the former-name requests, even when the sender is the same company.
  4. Submit one request per sender and piece. A single request cannot stop all mail under a name.

Marketing mail and official mail

Removal requests cover advertising only. They do not update your name with a creditor, agency, or medical provider. If a financial institution is mixing your names in its mailings, contact its customer service to correct your profile. Do not photograph bills, medical records, or financial documents. Our guide at the main junk mail guide explains where advertising removal fits in managing your mail.

Allow time, then reassess

Mailings are prepared in advance, so some advertising under your former name may still arrive. If pieces persist after several months, contact the sender directly and ask them to update or remove the record. Support at Junk Mail Magic support can help identify a sender from a photo. Terms are at the pricing page.

Have an unwanted advertisement ready?

Photograph one piece you are authorized to handle, with the sender and full mailing label visible. Review the details before submitting. The first request is free; the sender controls the response.
