Reduce wholesale catalogs after changing product lines

If you dropped a department, write to each supplier that still mails catalogs for it and ask to stop marketing for that line only. Limit the request to advertising so open orders and current account contacts continue. Use the contact route on the supplier's official site, not a phone number or link printed on an unfamiliar mailer.

Narrow the request to the discontinued line

  1. Sort the catalogs by product category. Set aside the ones for the discontinued department and keep any that cover lines you still carry.
  2. For each supplier, note the name, the catalog title and the name and address on the label. Do not photograph invoices, order confirmations or anything with account numbers.
  3. Find the supplier's own contact page or marketing-preferences page. Check whether a mailed-catalog option exists before assuming one does.
  4. Ask to remove the business from catalogs for the discontinued category, and state that existing orders and account communications should continue.
  5. If a supplier offers only one mailing-list choice, decide whether losing catalogs for lines you still use is acceptable before you submit.

Why the category matters more than the sender

A supplier often sells several lines, and some may still be useful to you. A request to stop everything can remove catalogs you rely on for reordering. Naming the discontinued category gives the supplier something specific to act on, though only that supplier can tell you whether it can split its mailings by category.

The FTC advises checking purchases and invoices against your approved records. Apply the same check here: confirm a catalog comes from a supplier you actually deal with before replying to anything printed on it. Send requests from a contact authorized to speak for the business.

Sample supplier request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

To [supplier name] marketing or customer service: Please remove [business name] at [mailing address] from printed catalogs and promotions for [discontinued department or product line]. This is a marketing request only. Please continue existing orders, invoices and account communications. If you cannot separate mailings by category, please tell me which options are available.

Check the next mailing, then decide

When the next catalog for that department arrives, compare its label with your notes. If the name or address differs, send the same supplier a short follow-up listing that variant. If a supplier's reply says it cannot separate categories, choose between keeping all its catalogs or stopping all of them.
