Does USPS Hold Mail stop advertising?
No. USPS Hold Mail pauses delivery to an eligible address for three to thirty days. It does not remove your address from any advertising list, so held advertising arrives with the rest of the mail when delivery resumes. Treat the hold as a delivery decision and any request to an advertiser as a separate task.
Split the trip into two decisions
- Decide whether you need a hold at all. Check the USPS Hold Mail page to see whether your address is eligible and whether your dates fit the three to thirty day range.
- Ask every adult at the address before pausing delivery. A hold covers the address, so do not set one up that interrupts another resident's mail without their agreement.
- Before you leave, sort the advertising already in the box. For each unwanted piece, note the sender name and the name and address printed on the label, because a direct request will need them.
- Choose the senders worth contacting. Look on each sender's own website or contact page for a way to stop mailed advertising, and ask the sender if you cannot find one.
Why a hold cannot work as a filter
A hold does not sort mail by type. Bills and letters wait alongside catalogs, and all of it is delivered together afterward. Setting up holds again and again does not get rid of advertising, and it is not a way to ask a sender to stop.
If something in the returned stack looks like suspected fraud, theft or identity misuse rather than ordinary advertising, report it through the USPIS reporting page. Delivery problems such as missed or misdelivered mail go through a separate USPS route.

Build the travel checklist
Write one line for the postal decision: hold, forward or neither, with dates. Under it, list each unwanted sender and the date you sent a request. When you get back, sort the mail against that list. If a sender you already asked is still mailing, send that sender a short follow-up that quotes the date of your first request.

Choose the route that matches the mailing
Use the official route described in this guide for this kind of mail. For a separate ordinary advertisement, Junk Mail Magic can help prepare a sender-specific removal request.
