Check the high school recruiter-contact opt-out

Look for the school’s notice about releasing secondary students’ names, addresses and telephone listings to military recruiters and colleges. For districts covered by the federal rule, a written opt-out can restrict those disclosures. The school may combine this notice with its directory-information notice or provide it separately.

Read both school notices

  1. Find the current notices through the school’s verified records office or website. Identify whether one form covers both directory information and recruiter disclosures.
  2. Check who must sign this request. Under the recruiter provision, the parent makes the choice for a student under 18; at 18, the choice transfers to the student.
  3. Locate the name, address and telephone fields and actual recipients covered. If a general directory opt-out already covers these fields, ask the school to confirm how that request is recorded.
  4. Follow the school’s written submission instructions. Keep the request and ask for confirmation of the particular disclosure restriction recorded.

A separate disclosure question

The Department of Education’s guidance explains this rule for local educational agencies receiving the covered federal education funds. Do not assume every school uses the same notice, deadline or form. A directory policy that omits these contact fields does not itself answer the separate recruiter disclosure question.

This action concerns the school’s release of information. It does not remove records a recruiter or college obtained elsewhere, change enrollment, or decide any Selective Service obligation.

Example question for the school records office

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

I am [the parent of a student under 18 / a student age 18 or older]. Please identify the current written opt-out for disclosure of [student name]’s name, address and telephone listing to recipients covered by your recruiter notice. I submitted [directory form or other request] on [date]. Does it cover these disclosures, or is another written request needed?

Ask a precise records question

If the notices conflict, ask which written request controls these three fields. Keep the explanation with your request so you can distinguish this choice from a college’s own mailing preference.
