Flatten a curved catalog before photographing it

Catalogs that arrive rolled often stay curved. The curve can throw part of the label out of focus and cast shadows across the print. Flattening the catalog first helps prevent a blurry photo.

How to flatten and shoot

  1. Place the catalog with the mailing label facing up on a plain surface.
  2. Hold the outer edges flat, or use small weights away from the label and sender details. Keep fingers out of the frame.
  3. Hold the camera parallel to the page. Move the light if your hand or phone casts a shadow across the label.
  4. Zoom into the saved photo and check the full name, street address, unit, ZIP code and sender before submitting.

Avoiding shadow and accidental cover

A catalog that will not stay flat on its own may need steady pressure along the spine. Do not bend it back sharply, which can crack the spine. The main risk while holding the piece is a finger slipping over a sender code or postal line printed near the label. Those details can help identify the sender, so confirm the whole label area is visible before you shoot.

Shoot from directly overhead

A straight overhead shot of a flat catalog avoids most focus and shadow problems. Take the photo, view it at full size, and confirm the label is sharp from end to end before you upload.
