Stop advertising to a closed office

Advertising addressed to a closed office still arrives wherever that mail now goes, whether that is another branch, a PO box or a forwarding address. Removing promotional senders takes some care so that active business correspondence at the same address is not disturbed.

Steps to clear advertising for a closed location

  1. Confirm you are authorized to manage the business's mail and identify the old office address exactly as printed.
  2. Separate ordinary advertising from invoices, account notices and documents the business still needs.
  3. For each unwanted advertiser, save a readable label and use its published removal route or a Junk Mail Magic request.
  4. Review forwarding and address changes separately with the person responsible for the business's important correspondence.

Forwarding does not filter advertising

Forwarding and marketing preferences are separate matters. Ending a forwarding arrangement does not remove the business from an advertiser's list. Review delivery arrangements with USPS using its current instructions, and update important correspondents directly. Use advertising removal requests only for senders the business no longer wants to hear from.

Assign an owner for the remaining mail

Name one person to sort the mail that still arrives from the closed location. Give that person the list of removal requests you submitted so they can spot new senders and handle them the same way.
