Keep a gift recipient out of your mailing preferences

Before you place a gift order, find the shipping address field and the account or billing fields, and decide whose name and address belong in each. Then read any marketing choice on the page and see whose address it sits beside. The checkout form and the store's published privacy policy are the only places that can tell you how a gift shipping address is used.

Match each field to a person

  1. List every checkout field that asks for a name or address, with its label: shipping, billing, gift recipient or account.
  2. Copy the exact wording of any marketing checkbox or preference note near those fields. Note whether it mentions mail, email or both, and whether it appears next to your details or the recipient's.
  3. Read the store's privacy policy for what it says about addresses entered at checkout. If it does not mention shipping addresses, record that as not stated.
  4. If the form has a gift option, such as a message or hidden prices, check whether it says anything about the recipient's details. Silence there does not mean the recipient is kept off any list.
  5. Set your preference boxes only after each one is matched to a name and address.

One order, two people

A gift order can hold your details as the customer and the recipient's as the delivery address. The page may not say whether the store treats those differently, so go by what the form and policy actually state and ask about the rest.

The recipient's address is theirs. If they may not want advertising from this store, ask them before you enter it, and do not make preference requests for them without their permission.

Private gift-order worksheet

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Store name: [store name] Shipping field label: [label as shown] Billing or account field label: [label as shown] Marketing choice wording, copied exactly: [exact wording] Whose details it sits beside: [mine / recipient's] Policy on shipping addresses: [quote or 'not stated'] Question for the store: Will an address entered only as a gift shipping address for [order or item] be used for marketing mail? Recipient agreed to this address being used: [yes / no]

Send the store your question

If the page and policy say nothing about gift shipping addresses, send customer service the question from the worksheet before you order. Their answer tells you whether to order as is, ask the recipient first, or ship somewhere else.
