Handle advertising from a renamed brand

A company can rebrand without telling everyone on its mailing list. Mail under a former name does not necessarily come from a different company. Check the connection on the current official site before you decide how to respond.

Steps to handle mail from a company that has rebranded

  1. Search for the old brand name to see whether an official announcement or redirect shows it now operates under a new name, using the company's current site or a recognized news source.
  2. On the current site, read the privacy policy or contact page for any statement that the company took over mailing records from the previous brand.
  3. If the site confirms the connection, send your removal request through the current company's published opt-out route and mention the former brand name so they can find your record.
  4. If the connection is not confirmed, contact the current company and ask whether it holds records under the former brand before you submit anything.

Acquisitions can change the picture

A rebrand after an acquisition differs from a simple name change. The new owner may or may not have taken over the earlier company's mailing lists, and its opt-out process may be different. Do not assume a request to the current company covers records held under the earlier one. Ask whether its opt-out applies to records that came from the acquired brand.

Name both brands in your request

In your message, give both the former and current brand names so the company can check each record. Keep any confirmation you receive. If mail arrives under the old name again, you can show what you submitted and when.
