Prepare a California request to correct an address

A California correction request should identify the information you believe is wrong and explain the correction. Start with the field's purpose: an old address labeled as your current residence is different from an accurate record of a past delivery. An unwanted mailing alone does not settle which information the business holds.

Describe the specific inaccuracy

  1. Note where you saw the address and the date: for example, in an account profile or a response from the business. If you only have a mailer, say that the underlying field is unknown.
  2. Write the disputed value, what it is labeled as, and why you believe it is inaccurate. Keep an accurate past address distinct from an incorrect current address.
  3. Find the correction route in the business's California privacy notice. Use that designated route and identify this as a request to correct information.
  4. List any supporting material you have. Ask which documentation is needed and how to provide it securely before sending unrelated bills or identity documents.
  5. Read the response for the actual field changed or the reason for a denial. Ask for clarification if it merely says your preferences were updated.

Verification should not depend on the disputed address

The CCPA correction right applies to California residents and covered businesses, with exceptions. The business must verify the requester. Under the current regulation, it must use information other than the field being challenged; a disputed address should not be the means of verifying identity.

Correcting information does not itself request an end to postal advertising. If your goal is fewer promotions, state that separately. Handle an urgent delivery or billing-address change through the relevant account process as well.

Private correction brief

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Business: [name] Information seen in: [profile / response / mailer / other] Date seen: [date] Field label: [current address / past delivery / unknown] Value I believe is inaccurate: [address] Requested correction: [value] Reason and supporting material available: [brief explanation] Official correction route: [URL or contact] Business response: [changed field / denied and reason / unclear] Separate postal preference needed: [yes / no]

Check the result against your original question

Keep the response beside the brief you sent. Confirm whether it answers the current-address issue or only changes a mailing preference. If a correction is refused, save the stated reason and ask about anything that remains unclear.

Choose the route that matches the mailing

Use the official route described in this guide for this kind of mail. For a separate ordinary advertisement, Junk Mail Magic can help prepare a sender-specific removal request.
