Check a California opt-out form that asks for ID
If a California sale or sharing opt-out asks for identity documents, first check which request you selected. That choice has different verification rules from a request to obtain, delete or correct personal information. A form containing several options can make it easy to end up in the wrong process.
Identify what the form is asking you to do
- Reach the form through the business's official privacy page. Copy the name of the option you selected, such as opting out of sale or sharing.
- List the fields it requires without filling in sensitive values. Distinguish details used to find the relevant information from a demand to prove identity.
- If the form requests a photo of you with a driver's license for a sale or sharing opt-out, pause and ask the privacy contact why that step appears.
- Tell the contact which right you are exercising. Ask whether you opened a form for access, deletion or correction instead, and request the correct opt-out route if so.
- Save the form wording and the reply. If the process still appears inconsistent with the official rule, use those facts when considering a CalPrivacy complaint.
Matching information is a different question
The current California regulation bars identity verification for a sale or sharing opt-out, while allowing necessary information to carry out the request. It gives a license selfie as an example of an impermissible burden. Requests to know, delete or correct information require identity verification.
These are rules for CCPA requests involving California residents and covered businesses. They do not establish the requirements of every mail-removal program. Keep this inquiry with the business's privacy contact, and keep copies of identity documents out of a junk-mail photo batch.
Question about an opt-out form
Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.
Ask about the requirement, without sending the document
Your first question can name the field and the selected request type. There is no need to attach the document merely to ask why the form wants it. Keep the response with your notes before deciding the next step.
