Reduce mail after comparing auto insurance

Mail after a quote comparison can come from the comparison service and from individual insurers. Use the name printed on each mailer to list every sender, then ask each one separately to stop printed offers.

Build the sender list first

  1. Gather the offers and write down the company name on each. A logo or format does not show where a company got your address, so do not guess which site passed on your details.
  2. Mark each piece as an advertisement or a notice about a policy you hold. Ask to stop the advertising only.
  3. Contact the comparison service through its official website and ask what mailing preference it keeps.
  4. Contact each insurer the same way. If an offer says you were prescreened, you can still ask that insurer directly. The FTC also lists a separate opt-out program for prescreened credit and insurance offers, which applies only to offers within its scope.
  5. Record each request next to the sender's name.

Keep coverage separate from mail requests

If one of these companies already insures you, say so in your request and ask that policy notices continue. Billing, renewal or claims questions go to the insurer through the number on your policy, not through a marketing request.

Each insurer and the comparison service decide what their own preferences cover. A reply from one tells you nothing about another, so each line on the worksheet needs its own answer.

Comparison service: [name] Date used: [date] Insurer 1: [name] | Mailer received: [date] | Request sent: [date] | Reply: [notes] Insurer 2: [name] | Mailer received: [date] | Request sent: [date] | Reply: [notes] Insurer 3: [name] | Mailer received: [date] | Request sent: [date] | Reply: [notes] Prescreened offer noted: [sender, if any] Current policy with: [insurer, if any]

Matching later mail

When an offer arrives after you have written, find that sender's line. If the sender has no line, add one and send a first request. If the line shows a request already sent, follow up with the reference from the new mailer.
