How to Stop Mortgage Offers by Mail

Mortgage applications and home purchases can be followed by a rush of loan advertisements. The right opt-out depends on whether the offer came from credit-bureau prescreening or another source.

For a prescreened mortgage or refinance offer, use OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-567-8688. If the advertisement is not prescreened, contact the lender or marketer named on the piece and request removal from its postal marketing list.

Why mortgage offers arrive

The Federal Trade Commission explains that applying for a mortgage can trigger competing prescreened or preapproved offers. Other mail may follow a home purchase, a lender relationship, or information obtained from a source other than a credit-bureau prescreening list.

Look for a section headed “PRESCREEN&OPT-OUT NOTICE” and an opt-out phone number. That notice identifies an offer based on consumer-report information. A mailer without the notice needs a sender-specific request and may not be affected by OptOutPrescreen.

Stop prescreened mortgage solicitations

  1. Go directly to OptOutPrescreen.com or call 1-888-567-8688.
  2. Choose the five-year electronic option or begin a permanent opt-out.
  3. For permanent removal, print, sign, and return the official election form.
  4. If a mortgage has two applicants, each person should make an individual choice for their own credit file.

The FTC says requests are processed within five days, but offers based on information already supplied to a company may continue for several weeks. Do not send identity documents or a Social Security number to Junk Mail Magic or to an advertiser.

Handle other loan marketing separately

OptOutPrescreen does not cover every refinance postcard, home-equity promotion, or offer from a lender with which you already have a relationship. Use the sender's official website, secure account message, privacy notice, or published customer-service number. Ask to stop postal marketing at the exact name and address printed on the piece.

If repeated solicitations come from one national bank, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency advises calling or writing to that bank to request that the solicitations stop.

Verify official-looking mail before responding

The FTC warns that some mortgage advertisements use government symbols or names that can make the piece look official. Do not rely on the telephone number or web address printed on a suspicious solicitation. Find the lender, mortgage servicer, or government agency through a known statement or its independently verified website.

Keep statements, escrow notices, transfer notices, tax documents, delinquency letters, insurance requirements, and other servicing mail. A marketing removal request should not interrupt communications about a loan you actually have.

Where Junk Mail Magic fits

Use the official prescreen opt-out when the notice appears on the offer. For a separate mortgage advertisement, photograph one clear piece so Junk Mail Magic can identify the sender and prepare a focused postal-marketing request. The app does not cancel a loan, dispute a charge, or change your mortgage servicing preferences.

For other categories, use the complete junk mail guide.
