How to Stop Defenders of Wildlife Mail

Defenders of Wildlife tells members and non-donors to contact Membership Services about unwanted mail. Write to membership@defenders.org or call 1-800-385-9712 with the printed recipient and address.

Tell Membership Services which mail to stop

The organization's FAQs name membership@defenders.org and 1-800-385-9712. You do not have to become a donor to ask about a mailing: the FAQ explicitly includes people who have never donated.

Identify the appeal rather than a general interest in wildlife. State no postal fundraising appeals, then the name and full address from its label. If the envelope has a member number or reference code, include that in the request without attaching donation-account or payment documents.

Please stop Defenders of Wildlife postal fundraising appeals for [name as printed] at [full mailing address, including unit and ZIP code]. My printed reference, if present, is [reference].

Please also exclude this address from future physical mailing-list exchange or rental. Please keep my existing gifts and necessary receipts unchanged, and confirm each preference recorded.

A renewal notice may be a different question

If you recently renewed, decide whether you want to stop appeals or correct an apparent renewal mistake. Those are different requests. Include the renewal date only when it helps Membership Services investigate the notice; there is no need to email a card number or bank statement.

The FAQ discusses notices and donations crossing in the mail. It also publishes a 45-to-60-day allowance for an address change. That address-change allowance is not a promised deadline for every unsubscribe. Ask what applies to your specific preference instead of using an unrelated time window.

If you want program news but not requests for money, describe that preference. Do not assume that all paper pieces belong to one category. Save the reply explaining what can be retained and what was suppressed.

Postal-address sharing is another choice

The FAQ separately explains physical mailing-list exchange and rental. Membership Services is also the published contact for exclusion from those uses. Keep that instruction in its own sentence so the response can confirm it independently of Defenders' own mail.

A prospective sharing choice is not a recall of every address already supplied elsewhere. If a different organization sends an appeal, use its own contact and printed label. Do not forward a stack of unrelated envelopes as though Defenders manages every environmental charity's records.

Explain old or deceased-recipient records

The FAQ provides the same Membership Services email for mail to someone who moved or died. Say that this is the reason for the request; do not impersonate the printed recipient or describe their record as your membership.

For duplicate copies, list the exact label variations and any different references. Preserve one example until the response makes clear which records were changed. If mail continues, reply with the new item's date and label rather than starting another unexplained unsubscribe. Copying this draft does not send it or establish that removal occurred.

Save the Defenders mailing record

Keep the recipient, address and reference code visible in your photo. Make the direct Membership Services request yourself and retain its confirmation.
