How to Stop ACLU Paper Mail

The ACLU has a communication preferences form with a Paper mail section. It lets you stop all mailings, receive fewer or choose one a year. Email unsubscribe, phone contact and data sharing have different controls.

Choose the Paper mail setting you mean

The ACLU communication preferences form offers unchanged mail, fewer mailings, one mailing a year or “Unsubscribe from all mailings.” The reduced option is typically four a year. Read the Paper mail section before submitting; keeping the existing setting does not stop anything.

The form requests identifying contact information and has a member-ID field if available. Apply the change to the mailing address you want covered. It instructs people with multiple addresses or phone numbers to submit separate forms.

Lay the envelopes beside each other first. An old address, an abbreviated name and a missing unit can make it hard to describe the request clearly. List the exact versions you want checked. Do not replace every label with one corrected address and then assume the other records were found.

Review the sharing choices separately

The form distinguishes list-sharing agreements from data sharing with platforms delivering targeted content. It warns that opting out of the latter also unsubscribes you from email communications. Choose the controls you intend; they are not interchangeable paper-mail buttons.

If you still want email updates, read that warning before selecting a broader option. If you want no appeals and no list sharing, make both requests explicit. Save a note of the actual selections so a later support reply can be checked against them.

A useful confirmation names the preference and the affected address. A message saying the form arrived only tells you it was received. Ask whether the postal preference and the separate sharing choice were recorded if the response does not say.

Published alternatives when you need help

The preference page also publishes ACLUpreferences@ACLU.org and ACLU Membership Department, 125 Broad Street, 18th Floor, New York, NY 10004. For assistance, the Donor Relations contact page lists 1-888-567-2258.

Ask about paper-mail communications, not simply “unsubscribe me.” Give the name and address printed on the appeal and a member ID if you have one. Do not send payment information through the contact form. If you need a receipt, say you want to retain that necessary correspondence while changing appeals.

Email, text and donations are different requests

The ACLU help article directs email and recurring-text changes to those channels. An email footer does not replace the postal form. Nor should a mailing preference be used as an instruction to cancel a monthly gift.

Keep the date and any postal timeframe support provides. If mail continues, send one recent label and your earlier confirmation rather than repeating an unclear request. Our charity-mail guide has wording for a paper-only request that leaves donations separate.

Have another unwanted appeal?

Use the ACLU form for ACLU preferences. For a different sender, photograph the actual mailer and readable label so we can prepare the right request. Your first request is free.
