Verify insurance ads sent after a household death
Treat an apparent premium notice, claim form or policy change as possible policy correspondence until you verify it. Wording alone does not establish that it is genuine. A quote or enrollment invitation may be an advertisement, but check whether it concerns existing coverage before asking to stop it. Compare the sender with the household's policy records and use the insurer's verified contact route.
Check each piece against the policy list
- Write down the insurer name exactly as printed. Don't call a number printed on the mail to check it.
- List the insurers on policies the household is known to hold, using documents you already keep privately. Mark each mailing as a match, no match or unsure.
- Read each piece for its request. Note whether it asks for a premium, a claim, a signature or a policy decision, or whether it invites you to buy coverage.
- Keep anything that looks like policy business in the estate papers. Contact that insurer through details from the policy file or the insurer's own website.
- Mark pieces that are clearly sales offers as candidates for a stop request to that sender. Leave unsure items for the authorized person to review.
When a known insurer sends a sales offer
An insurer that holds a household policy may also mail offers for other coverage. A matching name on the policy list doesn't settle whether a piece is advertising. You can ask a current insurer to stop its marketing mail. Name the policyholder as printed on the label and say the request covers advertising only, not policy correspondence. The insurer's reply should say what it will change.
Keep any correspondence the estate may need. USPS handles forwarding of a deceased person's mail separately from removal from advertising lists, so a stop request doesn't replace forwarding.

Clear the unsure rows
Take the unsure rows and their mailings to whoever is authorized to handle the estate, and ask them to confirm which insurers hold active policies. Send stop requests only for pieces confirmed as sales offers, using each insurer's own contact route.
