Keep benefit renewal letters separate from advertising

Move anything that looks like a benefit renewal out of the advertising pile and read it before you decide what it is. A letter from an agency or insurer may ask you to do something that affects your coverage or benefits, so keep it out of any removal batch. If you are not sure who sent it, check with a contact you already trust.

Sort and confirm before you act

  1. Take the letter out of the ad pile. Note the agency or insurer named, what it asks you to do and the date to act by.
  2. Check the sender against contact details you already have, such as the number on your card or a website you already use. Do not rely only on contact details printed in the letter.
  3. Ask that contact whether the notice is current and what you need to do. Write down the answer and who gave it.
  4. Keep the letter with your benefit records until the matter is resolved.

Telling a coverage notice from plan marketing

A brochure comparing plans is not automatically an advertisement; official Medicare materials also explain plan choices. Confirm the sender and purpose instead of relying on the format, your printed name or a deadline.

Keep possible benefit, enrollment, appeal and billing mail for verification. Once the agency or insurer confirms what action is required, handle it through that official route. Request advertising removal only for separately confirmed promotional mail.

Private renewal-letter worksheet

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Date received: [date] Agency or insurer named: [name] What the letter asks me to do: [action] Deadline to verify or respond: [date] Reminder set for: [date] Trusted contact used: [contact] Date contacted: [date] Confirmed current: [yes / no / unsure] Next step: [action]

Log the deadline before you file the letter

Write the response date on the worksheet and set a reminder for a few days before it. If the contact confirms that action is needed, do that first. Send removal requests only for pieces you have already confirmed are advertising.
