Sort mortgage-protection insurance advertising
A mailer that mentions your mortgage may not come from your lender, and it does not show that you are required to buy anything. Recorded home-purchase and mortgage information can become public, and advertisers may use it. Before you reply, check the claimed relationship with your lender using contact details you already have.
Check the claimed lender link
- Write down the sender's name exactly as printed. Note whether the mailer says it is affiliated with your lender.
- Find your lender's contact details in your closing papers or a past statement. Do not use the mailer for this. Ask whether the lender sent the offer or works with the named company.
- Ask the lender whether your loan has any insurance requirement and how they would tell you about one. Then you are not relying on the solicitation's wording.
- Record the lender’s answer. If it does not recognize the sender, leave the claimed relationship unverified. Check any other named provider independently before deciding the piece is simply an advertisement.
- Decide whether you want this kind of product. For coverage questions, ask a licensed insurance professional or your lender, not the mailer.
Matching loan details are not proof
A mailer may print your lender's name or loan details because that information can be found in public records. Those details do not show any connection to your lender.
Verify a claimed bank relationship through a contact you already trust. Do not throw away every piece that looks similar, because your lender does send real notices about your loan. Keep your closing documents and lender correspondence together so a solicitation does not get mixed in with them.

Respond to the sender
Once you have confirmed that the piece is optional advertising, you can make a separate postal preference request to the advertiser. Keep any actual coverage or loan questions with the responsible provider, using the contact you verified.
