Deal with a catalog addressed to two people

A catalog addressed to two people may be filed under either name or as one shared record. A removal request from one person may end the mail for the other as well.

Steps for a two-name label

  1. Copy both names as printed and note their order. The record may be under the first name, the second, or both.
  2. Ask the other person named on the label whether they also want the mail to stop.
  3. If you agree, photograph the whole label and submit it through Junk Mail Magic. In your note, quote both names and ask the sender to remove the record.
  4. If only one of you wants removal, say in your note whose name should come off and ask whether the sender can do that for one name only.

When the two of you disagree

Senders differ on whether they can take one name off a shared record or must remove the whole entry. If the other person wants to keep getting the catalog, contact the sender to ask whether the label can be changed to one name instead of removing the record. Do not assume that option exists.

Tell the other person what you asked for

After you submit, tell the other person exactly what you requested, so they can contact the sender if the outcome is not what they wanted. Check back after a few weeks to see whether the mail has stopped.
