Can a no-junk-mail sticker stop USPS advertising?

Do not rely on a mailbox sticker as a postal opt-out request. Contact the sender of an unwanted advertisement and check whether an established program covers that kind of mail. A message displayed at your mailbox does not tell an advertiser which marketing record or campaign you want changed.

Use two actions instead of a sign

  1. Pick one unwanted mailer. Use your own search to find the sender's official contact page.
  2. Send that sender a request about your address. Say whether the mail shows a name or no name.
  3. For broad participating prospect mail, check DMAchoice’s current instructions. Prescreened credit and insurance offers use the credit-reporting industry’s separate OptOutPrescreen route. Neither program covers every type of advertising.
  4. Note what you sent and when, so you can match a repeat item to the right request.

Mail sent to every door

USPS says Every Door Direct Mail targets carrier routes and does not require a list of individual names. A sticker does not remove your address from a mailer's route. For EDDM Retail, USPS tells mailers to list addresses that asked for removal in the Do Not Deliver Address column on facing slips. That step belongs to each mailer and applies to that service. It is not a USPS suppression of all advertising.

Private two-action plan

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Mailer: [sender name] Name printed on the mail: [yes / no] Action A, request sent to: [official contact] Action B, program checked: [program name or none applies] Date sent: [date] Reply received: [yes / no] Mail to keep: [description]

Start with your most frequent mailer

Start with the senders that matter most to you and record the route used for each. Keep program confirmations separate from direct replies. If a sender says it uses a different distribution process, ask which contact can handle your specific delivery address.

Choose the route that matches the mailing

Use the official route described in this guide for this kind of mail. For a separate ordinary advertisement, Junk Mail Magic can help prepare a sender-specific removal request.
