Prepare a mail cleanup handoff for a caregiver

A caregiver who helps with mail needs to know exactly what they may touch. Advertising mail is one category. Statements, notices, and legal documents are another and should stay out of this task.

How to prepare the handoff

  1. Set aside bills, financial statements, medical papers, legal notices, and identity documents before the caregiver starts.
  2. Write a keep list of catalogs and mailers the person wants to continue receiving.
  3. Put the caregiver's scope in writing: which names they may act on, and that the person receiving the mail has approved it.
  4. Review the arrangement from time to time and update the keep list when preferences change.

Helping is not the same as authority

Helping with mail does not give a caregiver authority over someone's affairs. Confirm with the person receiving the mail what you may do, and keep the task to ordinary advertising mail.

Start with the simple part

Separate advertising from everything else first. With sensitive papers set aside and the keep list written, the cleanup is a short job. See the photo guide for what the label must show before you take any photo.
