Retake a mail photo taken in dim light

Check a dimly lit mail photo at full size before submitting it. Small label text can be unclear even when the whole page looks readable on the phone's screen.

How to retake in better light

  1. Take the mail to a room with a window and use indirect daylight, which is bright and even.
  2. Lay the piece flat on a light-colored surface instead of holding it. This reduces shake and keeps the label parallel to the lens.
  3. If daylight is not available, turn on several lights and place the mail where they overlap, so shadows are softer and no single beam causes glare.
  4. Review the photo at full zoom before you move the mail. The ZIP code digits and each letter of the sender name should be sharp.

What dim light does to small text

Look closely at the smallest print in the saved image. If the letters blur together, retake the photo with more light and keep the phone steady. Brightening the image afterward can help you inspect it, but it cannot reliably recover missing characters. Compare the result with the paper before submitting.

Check before you upload

Once the photo is bright and every character is clear, it is ready to submit.
