Does stopping prescreened mail affect your credit score?

Prescreen inquiries do not lower your score, and opting out does not improve it, according to the official OptOutPrescreen FAQ. Choose the marketing preference because of the offers you want to receive. You can still apply for credit or insurance after opting out.

Keep the two questions apart

  1. Write down the marketing change you want, for example fewer prescreened card offers.
  2. Separately, write down any credit action you are thinking about, such as an application or a freeze.
  3. For the marketing change, use the official prescreen service and choose five years or permanent.
  4. Take any question about how a specific credit action affects your score to the lender or credit bureau involved.

Freezes and leftover mail are different matters

Keep the advertising decision separate from an actual credit application. A lender’s assessment of an application is a different event from the prescreen inquiry used to select people for offers. If you have a question about a specific application, ask the lender or credit bureau involved.

Continued mail alone does not establish a credit-file problem. First check whether the offer came from a covered bureau list or a company’s own marketing records. Then choose the appropriate program or sender contact.

Marketing choice and credit question worksheet

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Marketing change wanted: [describe] Route: official prescreen service Choice: [Five-year / Permanent / undecided] Signed form needed: [yes for permanent / no] Separate credit action being considered: [none / describe] Who to ask about that action: [lender / credit bureau name] Questions to ask: [list]

Next step

If the score question was what stopped you, decide between five years and permanent next. If you choose permanent, mark the signed election form as still to be returned on your worksheet, and check it off once you send it.
